Petals will brighten Columbus on October 11

Data shows emotional benefits of flowers; Dümmen Orange, Kroger, and Gems Group encourages Columbus residents to ‘Petal It Forward’

Columbus, OH, October 5, 2017 | Dümmen Orange is partnering with Kroger’s Columbus Division and the Gems Group to spread happiness by distributing bouquets of flowers on Wednesday, October 11. The initiative is part of a nationwide effort called Petal It Forward organized by the Society of American Florists (SAF). In addition to sharing the joy of giving and receiving flowers for no particular reason, Petal It Forward is inspired by data that shows the positive emotional benefits of flowers.

University research has long supported that flowers have an immediate impact on happiness and a long-term positive effect on moods. Recent SAF survey results show:

  • When it comes to happiness, it’s just as good to give flowers as it is to receive: 88 percent of Americans report that giving flowers makes them feel happy, while 80 percent reported that receiving flowers makes them feel happy.
  • Just being around flowers improves your mood: 76 percent of Americans agree that having flowers in their home or office improves their mood.
  • The best reason to receive flowers is “just because”: Women (92 percent) are more likely to agree with this, but the majority of men (three in four) also share this sentiment.

Beginning at 11 a.m., representatives from Dümmen Orange, Kroger, and the Gems Group will be randomly giving away 700 bouquets of flowers donated by Jardines de los Andes along High Street in downtown Columbus. After receiving their flowers, recipients are asked to keep one bouquet for themselves and share the other with a friend, coworker, or stranger. Representing all levels of the cut flower supply chain, the sponsors of this event include Dümmen Orange, a flower breeder and supplier, Jardines de los Andes, a grower, Gems Group, a marketer and distributor, and Kroger, a retail merchant.
